About The Artwork

Spleen - Chronicles of a (previously) underestimated routine is a project of works, all elaborated with acrylic paint and photographic collage on canvas, all in square format. They are subjects that have an evident reference to the historical period we have just lived; they retrace everyday life highlighting the loneliness made up of absences, expectations, distances between the subjects. And the "absences" metaphorically for me, bring restlessness, the spleen, a word deriving from the Greek σπλήν (splḕn), which means "spleen", like the English word. The concept of spleen and melancholy derives from the Greek medicine of humors, according to which, due to a strange association, black bile (produced by the spleen) leads to a state of restlessness, of existential malaise. Furthermore, in China the spleen is one of the foundations of character and is thought to affect mood. In my paintings I bridge traditional iconographic motifs with personal memories and a collective visual language of contemporary aesthetics, outlining tales that, while referring to a shared cultural heritage, remain both open and ambiguous.
I am guided in the choice of subjects by an emotional identification through which I weave links between my private experiences and the classic themes of art history, in an attempt to give shape to my present. On the canvas I juxtapose images from these worlds, allowing new analogies to emerge from their disparate subject matter. The result is a fragmentary narrative, a familiar but enigmatic story, permeated by an unreal atmosphere.
