About The Artwork

Having been born with vision in only one eye, I have always seen the world through a monocular lens. This more narrow window has made me hyper aware of fine details and imperfections. Oftentimes, it’s the uniqueness of the imperfections that interests me the most as I have a deep understand of how my own visual “imperfection” has lead me to see the world in unique ways. It has given me a deep appreciation for experiencing our world not only visually but also tacitly. As a result, I creat artworks that are densely layered and richly textured. I love assembling bits and pieces of things along with smooth flowing layers of paint. These works are from my Cracked Earth series of textural mixed media paintings with natural beeswax and dried earth mixed with pigment. The paintings are meant to be a reminder of the impact of climate change. I like to contrast smooth and cracked surfaces that remind me of the natural formations on the surface of parched dried up riverbeds. The cracked and fissured surface of the paintings represents the damage that is being done to our planet. However, the paintings are also beautiful. The cracks and fissures in the earth's surface are like a intricate work of art. They are a reminder of nature’s beauty, even in the face of destruction. Ultimately, these mixed media paintings aim to express love and loss. They are meant to convey a romantic nostalgia for the natural world as it transforms and interacts with an urban world. It’s an otherness that lies somewhere between the past and future. Nature’s wonder and beauty is enchanting even as it breaks down and adapts.

Kari Souders was born in upstate NY in 1967. In 1985-86 Kari studied art and culture in France. She went on to attend Syracuse University and obtained a BA in Fine Arts in 1990. In 1994 Kari received her MFA in painting from the University of Maryland where she attended on a full tuition teaching scholarship. With both a Bachelors and Masters in Fine Arts Kari has been honing her creative skills for decades. Her work is created through a ritualistic physical and structural approach. Her process involves mapping, exploring constraints and seeking the possibilities of continuous systems. Souders strives to harmonize mixed media through layering beeswax, paint and collage elements until they evolve to a mutual resolution over time. Unearthing the painting's hidden layers allows actual interaction between the inside and outside of the painting. Kari has had numerous gallery exhibitions and won a host of art awards. A selected group of these can be found on her website Bibliography. Kari’s work is collected by a diverse group of corporations and patrons around the globe.
