ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Tears There are tears of joy, tears of delight, tears of hope, tears of happiness, and it is better to finish associative array at this point. But life is life, which means there are also tears of deep sorrow, tears of disappointment and tears of unfulfilled dreams… This is the most emotional and personal of my collections. And, perhaps, the most abstract. It has almost nothing that could connect it with a tangible world, just a bare emotion, acute experience and subtle psychological states. Transparent layers of glaze, fluid moving forms, split complex colour and shiny lacquered surfaces create a sensation of looking at the canvas through tears. It is exactly in this collection that my favourite technique of pictorial contradistinctions shows itself quite distinctly. Plain, homogeneous surfaces of pure spectral colour emphasize and establish a stable base for pictorial, semitransparent technique details complex in terms of colour and painting technique. A live and dynamic forms shine through very simply shaped mechanistic smudges of subdued colour Airy and intangible space of the sky suddenly overflows into rain smudges pouring down the canvas. Whitened pink paint seems to cut into surface in the shape of strawberry yogurt stains – spray flies all over pictorial image. There is something barbarous, ignorant and even rude. This device seems to return viewer from a difficult journey into the depth of his soul back to the surface. «Life is just a vase with flowers and a cup of morning coffee on your table and nothing more, remember this and stop self-scrutiny», - this is what I am telling viewer. It is nothing but daily routine, daily fuss and simple monotonous actions that can bring back to life a person who got over a deep emotional shock. Sometimes I wash out parts of the image while all forms appear to dissolve, baring naked nerves – a rough white canvas surface. The work seems to shine from within and throbs like blood throbs in temples after sobbing. Pathetic and rituality are peculiar to me and sometimes they penetrate my paintings. And then it becomes something quite different, a tale from deep antiquity about a choir of bareheaded women criers, performing mourning anthem, desperate tears of goddess Isis, mourning Osiris or deep sorrow about the hard fate of one’s people. Yet, each time I start a new painting for that cycle, I am telling myself: «Let them be the tears of joy!»

About me I have a higher professional artistic education and a diploma from the Latvian Art Academy, department of monumental painting. Before the Academy I had studied at and finished with distinction department of easel painting as well as department of illustrations at Janis Rozental Riga Art High School. I further honed my skills of wall-painting and graffito at Florence University of the Arts. Since 2007 I have been a member of the artists’ union of Latvia. First place winner in the artistic scholarship contest named after professor Indulis Zarins. I opened more than twenty personal exhibitions and took an active part in group shows including exhibition at the gallery “Crous-Beaux-Arts” (Paris). I am proud to have been chosen to represent the art and culture of Latvia at the international conference Baltic Connecting to high-ranking guests from China, South Korea, the USA and Japan. I teach actively and conduct visiting master classes as well as run my own studio-gallery Karine Paronyanc Art studio in Riga. In my creative workshop I work with groups of children and adults (drawing, painting, composition), host corporate art-events, deliver lectures. Co-organizer, custodian and participator of international exhibition of artists of Latvia, Lithuania and Armenia “Armenian palette” at the Latvian Academy of Arts. Co-organizer of travelling exhibitions summer cycle “Flora Magica”. My credo lies in my belief that art should transcend habitual familiar exhibition space and search for new ways to interact with a viewer. My works are inspired by limitless possibilities of colour, infinity of visual forms and creative opportunities. Through colour, light and ornament I share with you my delights and joy of existence. The process of creation for me is an amazing journey in which the Sun, Cosmos, salt of the Earth and Nature’s rhythms applied to canvas surface create absolutely new dimensions in your personal space. The collection «Watermelons» took a very special place in my biography: watermelon-lotus has become my symbol, company logo and identification mark. I firmly believe in the importance of art, possibility to combine exquisiteness of form with a depth of content and joy of living. I cannot see any contradiction in a positive message of an art piece and serious semantic component. This is what makes my approach to art.
