About The Artwork

I am inspired by the energy and living spiritual connection I feel with nature in the character of trees, forest floors, light and and color. I wish to convey a feeling of awe and oneness with the land, earth and the cosmos. In my recent work I apply a process of painting in layers - acrylic, then oils, and finally oil pastels which creates an intense vibrancy. This work was based on drawings and digital color studies from a stay at Popham Beach in Maine. The figure in the upper cloud is based on an ink study by William Blake that intended for The Book of Job, but Blake never used it in the final publication of the book. I had already determined my composition before discovering the Blake which had a very similar to my own - two worlds, the lower, earthbound and the upper, spiritual. Blake had Job and his family, mine an upward reaching stand of trees.
