About The Artwork

This artwork is a triptych of 3 paintings, each with dimensions 150 cm (H) x 50 cm (W), so spans > 150 cm wide (as displayed). It represents 3 generations of 'Palenqueras' women: the daughter, mother and grandmother. This painting is from Sasha’s latest series ‘On a woman’s head – from Palenqueras to Crown Art’, as recently exhibited at the Consulate of Colombia in Brussels. Sasha makes a bridge between ‘Palenqueras’, women from America’s first ‘free town’ in Colombia who were able to escape from slavery and Crown Art, referring to the so-called ‘CROWN’ (Create a Respectful and Open Workplace for Natural Hair) Act prohibiting discrimination based on hairstyle and texture, which was only introduced in California since 2019. The power of women from all cultures and around the world is too often overlooked, trivialized or seen as ‘normal’. Worldwide, women are hailed or reviled based on appearance, not achievements, as is often the case with men. Also in Crown Art we find portraits of strong women: proud to be themselves, with their head of hair as the ultimate statement. A male-dominated society too often dictates what a woman should look like: neatly covered or as naked as possible, tantalizing or demure, provocative or modest. Whether it’s a fruit basket, a headscarf or just a natural or unconventional head of hair, there is always a lot to do about what should be going on in and on woman’s head. Sasha H. Denhaene studied psychology at the University of Antwerp and worked for many years as a therapist on themes such as relationship, sexuality and eating disorders, always based on a strong emancipatory commitment. She currently works as a writer, poet, painter and illustrator from her workshop in Antwerp. Her paintings offer a sharp look at injustice based on gender and focuses on gender equality. She portrays women from around the world to fight against all forms of gender discrimination; practices such as femail genital mutilation, rape, abuse, intimidation, etc. She made a series of paintings of raped women in DR Congo (now finally getting more attention with Dr. Mukwege’s Nobel Prize for Peace) and other strong women such as Zineb El Rhazoui (who remembers…Charlie Hebdo), Mama Masika, etc. In her writing, Sasha deals with these heavy subjects in a unique, light-hearted way with her infectious, absurd humor, making us think. She explores how our flexible, resourceful human brain legitimizes almost anything in the name of god, money, race or whatever…as long as it has a name. In her poems she fights the great fears that taunt us, little people. Those fears often accompany us throughout our lives; Primary fears of both children and adults: fear of the dark, fear of going to sleep, fear of death, fear of loneliness and fear of regret… All these things may seem far apart, but in the end they form a whole: giving a voice to what we all too often or too gladly forget…
