About The Artwork

A delicate and atmospheric etching of a sweeping avenue of trees. The grassy area behind the colleges of Cambridge, across the River Cam, is known as The Backs. This is the avenue that leads through, and takes you to the entrance to Clare College, seen at the centre of this print, at the bottom. As you walk along this avenue of huge trees, their branches touching above you, your heart soars. This etching was created using a zinc plate, aquatint (melting resin dust onto the plate with a flame, to allow the ink to 'grip'), sugar lift, acid and burnishing. The professional etching ink is smeared onto the plate and gently wiped. The image is created by placing the inked plate onto the bed of an etching press, with a sheet of 'Somerset' heavy weight, white paper, on top. The press is then 'hand wound', pressing the plate and paper together, transferring the image onto the paper. A limited edition print of just 25. As each etching is individually created, there will be slight variations, making each one unique. Image/plate size 17 x 31 cm Paper size 31 x 46 cm 10 prints are available, from a total edition of 25. This etching was short listed for the Royal Academy Summer Show. Artwork will be sent to you carefully wrapped in tissue paper, in a sturdy cardboard tube.

Lizzie Butler is an expressive, semi abstract artist, who works in a contemporary style in oil. Her strong spatial awareness and a passion for working en plein air, inform her practice and lead to paintings that recreate the intangible atmosphere found in landscapes and the peaceful silence of nature. Most of her paintings are begun outside and completed in her London studio. Although working primarily in oil, Lizzie also enjoys the physicality of exploring etching with zinc and steel plates, to create intaglio prints. Lizzie Butler's artwork has been exhibited at Leighton House Museum, Kensington, London, The Russell Gallery, London, and several other Galleries. Lizzie's paintings can be found in collections in America, New Zealand, the UK and across Europe, with several customers returning to buy further paintings and place commissions. March 2019 - Two pieces shortlisted for the Royal Academy of Arts summer exhibition.
