About The Artwork

The Book of Venice | Giovanni Cariani | 2022 Where is our sitter? He is late as usual. I wonder if he will show up. This would be our final sitting, as today I plan to complete the portrait. If I am honest, there is something about him that disturbs me, but I cannot put my finger on it. Why is that? Perhaps it is the hint of aggression behind his glance. You can feel the intense pent-up force inside of him. Perhaps it is simply his everyday expression, unconscious and unknowingly projected. He cut our last sitting short, storming out without so much as a word. He spent most of our session with his fist clenched on top of a lovely green book I had placed in front of him. I was hoping that perhaps he would read it and relax and open up a little to me. It is one of my favourite books, rare and precious, a wanderer’s guide… The Book of Venice. What should I do if he does not appear? Inspired by the "Portrait of a Venetian Gentleman". 1485-90, Italian Renaissance painting, oil on canvas.
