About The Artwork

My original paintings are available as Limited Edition prints. Each as authentic as the original and individually artisan produced in a choice of sizes, personally signed, numbered and certified. My fine art paper reproductions are printed using Canon Lucia EX pigment inks. The paper is a French made Cold Press style 320 gsm textured Cotton Rag – acid and lignin free to ensure a very long life. My canvas reproductions use the same quality Canon Lucia inks printed on 400 gsm Sihil Masterclass Cotton Poly Blend Canvas made, in Switzerland, by world-renown manufacturers. The canvas is spray coated with two coats of UV inhibiting, protective laminate ensuring a lifespan, under normal condition, of over 100 years. The same care and diligence is taken with the packaging of each Limited Edition print to ensure safe arrival at its destination. ABOUT THIS PAINTING Have you ever used the term - higgledy piggledy? Well that’s what sprang to mind when I was thinking about how to best describe my creative approach, my methodology. If I were asked to explain how I go about collating the ideas for each new painting ‘higgledy piggledy’ is the perfect description.I have no pre-defined work method. It‘s all haphazard, unbridled anarchy, a sort of self-controlled chaos. And this painting is typical - it’s a bit of a hotchpotch. I’ve brought together bits from earlier paintings, stuff I find and like and images I’ve saved thinking, I know one day I’ll use that. And like any good recipe, I just put all the ingredients in a bowl (in my head) and mix ‘em together and this is the result. The ideas for this painting started out with a photograph in a book. A book on, of all things, grasses and the photo was of Blue Wheat Grass, which is native to Tierra del Fuego. As grasses grow, it’s a very attractive grass. But I eventually ditched the notion of using it. So, it didn’t end up on the finished canvas but, nonetheless, deserves a mention being part of the process of deciding what to use and what to reject. The chocolate cup cake, self-designed beer coaster, iced doughnut and strawberry milk are not native to a small South American archipelago. But they are native to my imagination. And they, along with the baked beans, assorted fruit, tin-toy race car and female drowning in a swimming pool did get used, albeit in a higgledy-piggledy fashion. Proof, if ever needed, that - ‘Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction.’ I must also mention U.K. cartoonist Hunt Emerson who’s work I’ve always had a fondness for.

I was born in North Wales, educated in the North of England and grew up in London. I attended art college for five years graduating from Leeds College of Art (now Leeds Arts University) with a 1st. Class Honours BA in Fine Art (Painting). Amongst an array of artistic endeavours I’ve been a creative director in London ad-agencies, a copywriter, an animator, a comedy writer and performer, an art director and a graphic designer. In 2002, having tired of London, I migrated to the sun-drenched shores of Queensland, Australia which is now my home. In the years before this adventure I was commissioned to paint murals on the walls of Elton John’s Rocket Records. I designed and devised a host of album sleeves for world-wide, chart-toppers and worked extensively with George Harrison’s HandMade Films and with the Monty Pythons. I created movie posters and campaigns for the iconic Life of Brian and the Bond Movies, sold Bentley motor cars to the Japanese market and I’ve written strap-lines for Hollywood blockbusters. My career which has always been, let’s say unconventional, has now come full circle and to my complete surprise I’ve picked up the brushes again. I paint whatever interests me although I openly admit I’m unsure where the ideas spring from. I do know the subject matter must be challenging, engaging and seemingly, without any conscious or devious planning on my part, always turns out to be quirky, unconventional and unorthodox. I guess the words that best express and sum up my work are - ‘captivatingly idiosyncratic.’
