ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This is a stoneware clay swimming pool sculpture, with an iron oxide wash and turquoise melted glass for the water. My friend is an audacious activist and yet here she is, sitting on the side of her swimming pool being her usual cool self (in reality, her pool is much bigger than this). I was swimming by when she caught my eye – with her black cossie, black glasses and black trimmed sunhat. I got out to take a quick snap, because I thought I might paint her one day. However, sometime later, during a ceramic class, the scene unexpectedly started to take shape – it had stayed in my mind! This is one of the last pieces I completed before lockdown. I can’t wait to get back making sculptures again, because there’s still loads of room to expand on this idea, to make it into a series. The water is made from the glass of a smashed and melted Bombay Sapphire gin bottle.
