Elena Prosperi

Born and based in the Tuscan countryside near Florence, I am an artist working across mosaic, painting, and sculpture. My work draws on a longstanding fascination with nature, animals, and the symbolic meanings that images can hold.
I discovered mosaic while studying sculpture at the Art Institute of Porta Romana in Florence. I later studied decoration at the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara and specialised in contemporary mosaic in Ravenna, where my research explored the symbolism of animals, from classical mosaics to contemporary art.
Mosaic has remained a constant in my practice. I am fascinated by its relationship with light, the texture of its surfaces, and the possibilities that emerge from combining different materials. I work with both traditional tesserae and unexpected elements, including shells, wood, metal, and plastic. I enjoy the precision the technique demands, but also the unexpected discoveries that can arise in the process, when what might seem like a mistake becomes an essential part of the work.
My imagery moves between the natural world, symbolism, and popular culture. Animals and organic forms recur throughout my work, alongside portraits inspired by contemporary cultural icons whose identities have grown beyon...
