Matt Hill was born in Roehampton, southwest London in 1968 and has spent most of his life there and in Hampshire. He currently lives in on the New Forest coast in Lymington and draws inspiration from the Solent's salt marshes, estuaries, creeks, shingle beaches and saltings.
His artistic influences include painters such as Anselm Kiefer, Ian McKeever, Antoni Tàpies, Edvard Munch and Kurt Jackson. He draws inspiration from his emotional response to the landscape, combined with memory, abstracted mark making, line and colour.
Matt paints on board or stretched canvas and usually uses acrylic or oil paint. He starts from en plein air sketches and drawings that are finished in his Lymington studio.
After leaving teaching in August 2017, Matt has started painting full time and is now seeking opportunities to exhibit and gain gallery representation.
He studied Fine Art at Leeds and graduated with a BA (Hons) in 1991. Before that he studied Foundation art at Winchester School of Art in 1988.
