Jo Clements

I am a visual artist based in Manchester UK who has exhibited widely in the UK and internationally, with a long-standing interest in the intersections of materiality, cognitive science, and social identity. My work explores how knowledge- especially knowledge that is embodied, gendered, or classed - is transmitted, stored, and valued. Through sculpture, drawing, sound, and digital media, I investigate how meaning is constructed through both physical and cultural systems, from neural networks to educational materials.
Research is a constant and important part of my practice and includes archival investigations into medical and botanical imagery, neuroscientific developments and histories. My work is informed by an interest in gender as a constructed and performed system, shaped through visual language, material culture, and learned behaviours rather than biological fixity.
I often draw upon my training as a couture milliner, an historically feminised and highly skilled discipline, using this embodied knowledge to produce surreal sculptures. These works employ incongruous combinations of materials such as 3D printing, liquid plastic, copper, and textiles,
