Louis Andrada

I am an artist made in Brazil and exported to Toronto. I never knew how to express myself the way others seemed to. I felt alone even when people were around, carried things I could not name and could not release. I did not understand until much later that painting was the only place those things could take shape.
Most of my work portrays darkness, grief, fear and sadness because that is what I kept sealed inside all those years. What goes onto the canvas is everything that wished it could have been said, and never was.

Horror, folklore and occult imagery are not escapes for me. They are the means by which I look directly at what I feared. My foundation in analog film photography shaped how I understand images, and that understanding lives in the paint. My works are built through layers of acrylic, accumulating and eroding, surfaces that do not give themselves away easily. My images tend to not want to be fully seen.
