"If you bring forth what is within you, it will save you. If you do not bring forth what is in you, it will destroy you." "  Devin Oatway was born in Goleta, CA. He graduated Stanford University in 2002 with a BA in English Literature. He helped found two co-ops, Shady Lane Studios in Austin, TX, and Firehouse Art Collective in Berkeley, CA, where he had his first solo show in 2010. In 2013, Devin was half of a duo Inagural Opening of Galerie 102 in Ojai, CA and became a member of the preeminent Artist group, Ojai Studio Artists. In 2014, he joined Elizabeth Gordon Gallery as his West Coast Representative. He lives and paints in Ojai and tries to live like a monk. Statement: I am an individual who experiences, at his core, an inordinate amount of brief joy alternating with sharp sorrow. During the last ten years, I have learned how to sublimate these deep feelings in the form of paintings, and am glad to offer them to others in this world. The deep feeling of joy and sorrow does not go away but is edified by my paintings, and so I continue to make them on a daily basis as long as I have the supplies and a place to do it. Although the paintings come from a deep source of sadness, at times, looking at my paintings makes me happier. Its like a poet, from my generation, said, “every time I press the keys it all gets reversed, the sound of loneliness, makes me happier.”
