About the Artist

Annabel Carington

United Kingdom

My artistic practice is focused on the meanings of attention and silence and what it means for there to be gaps; I am interested in exploring what is really going on when we think that nothing is happening. To date, the influence of literature and poetry on the visual has been a vehicle through which I have explored this, and I am currently at the beginning stages of a new series of work that looks at how this idea of what's missing might change in form on different fronts.

Extending out from this, I am interested in how our contemporary experience of place or culture is shaped by its history; and this is particularly demonstrated by my interest in the varying ways that nighttime is navigated in literature and art; and how our cultural and material understandings and experiences of night inform how it is represented.

I work mainly in painting and drawing from my studio in Yorkshire in the UK. The roots of my work are underpinned by a strong drawing practice and a firm belief in this as a foundation for excellence.

My paintings and drawings are in private collections all over the world, including the private collection at Kensington Palace.

A book about my Four Quartets series of paintings in published by Rook’s Nest in 2026.
