Enrique Oramas

Although the imprint of Oramas's work may initially convey a certain nihilism, he affirms through it that each vestige found in the dialogue with his work responds to a cautious and committed attitude towards the frantic drifts of human existence and its context.

The artist seems to ask himself: if I witness the violence which has been committed in the landscape, if I delve into its organicities-illnesses, will I be able to recover that primary look, that image on which the heart opened in a remote time? Is it possible that from the structured, cartesian, deconstructive, profane consciousness of modern man I can rescue the sacred character of the first landscape? His Dis-metrical Tensions respond affirmatively and travel through clouds escaped from refineries, tree bark sculpted with soot, pilose voids...

The search to answer his questions began during his time studying at the School of Art, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. 1982-86. As well as a sporadic but intense relationship with the artist César Manrique, who awakened his interest in the enigmas of "the territory" as a perception of what’s human, the vegetal and the mineral as separate realities at the expense of the same synergy.
The erudite, humanist and passionate teacher, Rafael Delgado Rodríguez, exerted a decisive influence on his artistic training, which definitively installed the essence of drawing in his language and the vision of a state of fragmented, ironic and lyrical balance.

In the years following his training, he worked for various graphic, editorial and advertising design studios, experiences which later contributed a large number of resources and nuances to his work. He then established his company “efímeros” (”ephemeral”) 1999, in which he developed an infinity of projects in the field of ephemeral architecture, performing arts and museography.
