Sarah Matthias

I started drawing since my childhood. My formal artistic journey began with art classes in Michigan, followed by more intensive classes at the Seattle Academy of Art where I explored oil painting through figures, landscapes, objects, and architectural subjects. Those classes taught me how to observe form, light, and structure, and they helped me build a strong foundation in traditional techniques. I expanded into watercolor and soft pastel, discovering how each medium brings a different kind of emotion and atmosphere to a painting. Pastel became my favorite. Its pure pigment gives my work vibrant color, softness, and immediacy. I love how pastel lets me blend light with my fingertips and create gentle transitions that feel alive. Whether I’m painting nature, architecture, or quiet everyday moments, pastel allows me to express warmth, delicacy, and mood in a way no other medium does.
