Increasingly, when attempting to describe the way I function as a visual artist, a word that comes to my mind is “reporter”. On examining the work I have under my belt – and the ideas I have in the hopper – I notice that my artwork often has to do with reporting on something going on somewhere in the world.
Perhaps it is because I listen to the radio while I work. Radio, and the images it conveys to my mind, filters into my art in myriad ways. News shows, talk shows, baseball games, all kinds of music, old-time radio – I take it all in while I work and somehow what I absorb seems to end up on my creative radar.
This is not to say that I am a totally serious artist and don’t have a lot of fun making my ideas come to life. I relish exploring the various media and methods that can help me best express myself and my ideas. While the ideas contained in a lot of my work are pretty serious, I have a need to integrate my own particular brand of humor into my work.
