Sofia Roman

My name is Sofia and I've been drawing my experiences with mental health since 2010.

My project, Phases, explores the episodes and symptoms of bipolar disorder: mania, depression, psychosis, and everything in between. My work is deeply personal, but it also speaks to a shared reality that many people with this disorder face.

Combining behavioral science with lived experience, my work uses analytical reflection and visual symbolism to examine mental illness, its associated stigma, and the systemic structures that influence identity and self-perception.

Through my art, I wish to open conversations meant to reduce shame and reimagine how mental disorders are seen, spoken about, and understood.
