About the Artist

Cheol Jin Lee

South Korea

I live in Korea and am engaged in creative activities under Bulguksa Temple in Gyeongju, which is registered as a World Heritage Site. I have been working on figure painting since I was in college because I have been interested in figure painting. In particular, through the name of a woman with a Korean sentiment of "Chunsim", I have been working on simply characterizing a character with the motif of women's happiness that can be found in everyday life. My work is a painting work that emphasizes the texture of Matière by stacking a thick layer of acrylic paint on the canvas, and it is about the small joys found in the lives and daily lives of happy women.
Since graduating from college, he has been working on nude figures until the early 2000s, and with the 2008 New York exhibition, the direction of his work began to change. This change has been extended to the 'Chunsimi' series that continues to this day.
The characters in the work are expressed as a symbolic character through the artist's interpretation rather than a realistic representation. The characters drawn in a simple and soft form convey comfort and warmth and try to approach the viewers in a friendly manner.
In recent work, flowers filled with screens are expressed in free and colorful colors. These flowers are not real flowers, but rather elements that symbolically reveal the happy emotions and feminine sensibilities of the character. In addition, collage work is performed by attaching objects such as photos or cloth on the background of a monochromatic tone, and it is attempting to expand pictorial expression.
Bright colors and free composition add vitality and vitality to the screen, and remind us of moments of happiness that can be found in ordinary daily life. The thick acrylic texture gives the work a rich vitality, and the entire screen contains the artist's heart to convey the bright and positive energy of life.
I want to ask the viewer a quiet question through the work. "What is the little happiness you found today?"
