Jessie Mahon (b. 1993) crafts dreamlike portals into human experience through meticulously rendered colored pencil drawings. Born in the American Midwest and now working from her Brooklyn studio, Mahon's visual language elevates everyday moments with the vivid surrealism reminiscent of 1980s-2000s animation. (Think William Eggleston meets Hayao Miyazaki.) Her anonymous figures inhabit richly detailed inner landscapes filled with loneliness, memory, beauty, and quiet contemplation. Drawing from her background in theatre, narrative forms the foundation of Mahon's practice, each composition telling stories that observation alone cannot capture. Her work has been exhibited at Rockefeller Center and is in the permanent collection of the Mattie Kelly Arts Center. She has worked with galleries and completed residencies across the United States, Portugal, and Mexico, while collaborating with HBO, Netflix, and Macmillan Publishing. Mahon's tender yet sophisticated drawings invite viewers to explore the complex emotional territories that connect us all.
She is an artist ambassador for the NYCLU and is a proud co-founder of Milroy Projects.
