I have lived and worked on the Big Island of Hawai'i since 2009. The inspiration provided by that change of location, from the San Francisco Bay Area to Keaʻau, Hawaii, is clearly evident in the work. My Berkeley roots have continued to guide my practice, even as my work now springs from Hawaii.
Ethel earned an MFA from the University of California in Berkeley, where she studied for six and a half years. As a graduate student Ethel was the recipient of the Eisner Prize in Art, in both of her graduate years. She also earned a BA in Psychology, and enjoys an on-going post-graduate study of the researches of psychoanalyst Carl Jung.
Ethel Recently mounted a solo exhibition, with sculptor, Karen Mortensen, entitled "KINDRED SPIRITS", at the East Hawaii Cultural Center. Ethel and Karen curated and installed the show themselves, utilizing the entire cultural center and sharing 80 artworks, during the month of July, 2012. The pages of visitors reviews were exemplary, and a full page article was published in the local Tribune Herald.
OPENING on AUGUST the 1st, 2014, "KINDRED SPIRITS II"
"We're doing it again!"
Ethel Mann and Karen Mortensen are mounting their second two woman exhibition at the Hawai'i Museum of Contemporary Art (HMOCA), also known as the East Hawai'i Cultural Center.
