Initially working in white earthenware clay or black wax, the maquettes are then transferred into plaster, then sometimes bronze.
The sculpture is at once both figurative and abstract, and the subject is always some aspect of the lone human form, be it a torso, a bust or limb.
The essential core of the lone human figure, expressed sometimes as a limbless, headless torso with all its weight and bulk is a motif that recurs again and again. It best portrays the significance, isolation and reality of modern existence. These are not idealised images of the heroic or beautiful, but an externalised ‘feeling’ of what lies within; our heavy selves’ JV
Juliet Valery studied at the London College of Printing, Chelsea School of Art and Kingston University, returning to teach as a visiting tutor at Chelsea and London Guildhall University in the late 1990s.
Throughout her artistic career she continued to attend life drawing class as a means of always returning to the figure, both ergonomically and aesthetically. Her concern for the three dimensional human form as an interface for expression continues to inform her sculpture.
‘Often working very fast gives the freshest, most direct emotional results.’ JV
