Ganga ( river Ganges), was based in the high realms of heaven in the Himalayas. She was asked by Rishi Bhagiratha (a learned sage) to come to the earth to wash away the sins of his ancestors and give the arid parched earth a new lease of life.
The problem however was that the force of the mighty Ganga would be too great for the earth to withstand and she would cause great flooding and destruction. The only person strong enough to withstand her powers and bring her arrogance down to earth was Shiva. Shiva stood firm and trapped Ganga in his matted hair as she rushed down to earth from heaven and softened her fall, then letting her down gently to flow down to the sea washing the sins of the departed and offering them salvation and also offering the earth pure water for regeneration.
For this reason, Shiva is also known as Gangadhar- the holder of Ganga, and Jaatadhari- The one with matted hair.

I am an Ophthalmologist, working in the NHS for the past 25 years. I have always been drawn to the ancient arts and architecture that resonate emotions and a joyous expression of imagination. I seek to explore the principles of Arth (meaning), Kama (desire), Dharma (virtue) and Moksha (liberation) through my art. For me art has a connection with the mysteries of the ancient world, a bridge between the old and new. My art is an amalgam of ancient culture, folkloric themes and tribal traditions, the use of natural materials, colours and dyes interwoven with myths and legends to create an illusion of the ethereal and immortal. I try to capture the strong forms of the masculine and feminine, the Physical and metaphysical, the Prakriti and purush. Bold strokes interlaced with intricate details, building texture and emphasis and a free flow of thought to create order and harmony on a blank canvas. It is an expression of my emotions and individuality and a path to an internal journey ,we all need to make at some stage in life.
