Andra Daans Born in Rotterdam in 1962, Dutch-Surinamese artist Andra Daans studied Fashion and Monumental Art at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague before continuing her education at the Free Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, where she focused on drawing the nude. Though not formally trained as a painter, she found her voice in oil on linen, developing a distinctive style that combines grisaille with vibrant colors, African patterns, and symbolic motifs. Her work often centers on children, exploring resilience, identity, and heritage while weaving together personal and cultural narratives. Exhibited internationally since the 1980s, Daans’ paintings are held in collections across Europe and the United States. Through her art, she seeks to provoke empathy, inspire reflection, and celebrate our shared humanity.
