Dennis is an artist who likes to see what happens when you mess with familiar images. Lately, he’s been making portraits of public figures using tightly rolled pages from The New Yorker magazine. The series, called Cuties, takes well-known faces and reduces them to simple, textured mosaics. It’s less about deep messages and more about seeing how little you need for a face to still “click” in your head.
“I think of my work as playing with how we recognize people,” Dennis says. “I’m not trying to make something permanent or profound. I’m more interested in the moment when an image falls apart, but your brain still fills in the blanks. That’s the sweet spot.”
