Naomi Campbell for Christian Lacroix, haute couture, Paris, 2003. Shot on DIA (Fuji Astia) with a Nikon f5. It's a photo, but looks like a fresco. After scanning I added a canvas-like texture and a floral wreath to give a dreamlike, timeless and humanizing touch and to mask out the bunion (she comes...

Photographer Massimiliano Gialdroni was born in Bobbio, Italy in 1974. He started the relationship with the camera as a child, because his father collected cameras and from time to time gave him one to let him experiment. Gialdroni started traveling pretty soon and he likes to represent his life as a book. The most significant pages stay for ever in mind, some of them printed on paper, some just ethereal, but strong. Encountering new people and cultures creates new reference points and develops both identity and way of interaction. Landmarks change, things grow, photographs stay. Gialdroni says: "Sometimes you need years to digest an image and start love or hate it, only because you change. Why am I taking pictures? Well, I could say that I am addicted and the entire process makes me feel good. The camera is the medium to create the photo. The mind is the medium to create the image......... I've learned that people are made of layers and sometimes you have to wait until the next one is revealed. Maybe you are stuck because you're pushing a door that says pull." What does inspire Gialdroni? His words: "I'm not talking only about inspiration in art, but the inspiration of life. For me music, I mean the soundtrack of my life, is very important, as places, portraits, souvenirs, geometric precision or total asymmetry. I am not a very comunicative kind of person (paradoxically chatty in exceptional cases), but I love to watch, which means to be a visual artist." Sometimes Gialdroni feels trapped when people expect to see only fairy tales and decadence stuff. It's definitely one of the main parts of his personality: darkness and silence. Strongs colors often help to add a touch of irony. Gialdroni likes the light, adores the shadow. Sometimes photography gives you no time to think. That can be a relief, and an escape. Other times it's more meditative. Photography crosses constantly between split-second decision and slower, more methodical ones, with every variation in between. Basically it is a bridge between subject and viewer; like an extended hand, or the beginning of a conversation. You leave something unsaid so that the viewer can fill it in the missing place. A photograph is completed only once it is looked at. The artist Massimiliano Gialdroni is now detached from his fashion photography background. The sense is a visual quest, in which even celebrities appear without glitter and manipulation, more human.
