Phil Burger is an French Japanese artist illustrator.Though he has described his work as modern illustration art, in truth Phil Burger creates visual stories that span centuries. Burger took the time to study and understand ukiyo-e, the 17th-century Japanese woodblock printing technique that created narrative images full of intricate lines and sensuous colors. The artist’s work bears many hallmarks of the genre, including the flattened planes, minimal backgrounds, and innovative palettes. But they have been updated for today’s landscape – the colors are brighter, the energy is lighter, and the subject matter knows no limits. Burger has taken ukiyo-e’s experimental spirit and multiplied it. Using japanese gouache on paper, Burger paints a wide range of characters. There are the beautiful ingénues familiar from ukiyo-e, but also children, members of other cultures far from Japan, and even pop culture figures. Burger depicts objects from the modern real world, and by placing his heroines among them he creates visually stunning stories for our era. The images infuse our own reality with life.
Phil Burger now divides his time between France and Japan.
