The DU TOIT PHOTOGRAVURE studio is owned and operated by Herman du Toit who was born and raised in Johannesburg South Africa. He first studied printmaking under the British printmaker Michael Taylor at the former University of Natal in South Africa in the 1970s. He has had a long and extensive career in fine arts starting as a lecturer (associate professor) in printmaking and art history at the former Natal Technikon, where he became head of the printmaking department. Later he served as director (dean) of the School of Fine Arts at the Durban University of Technology. On immigrating to the United States in 1993, Du Toit curated exhibitions and served as head of education and research for an extended period at the Brigham Young University Museum of Art. He has also had over 20 years of printmaking and graphic art experience.
In addition to an honors degree with dual majors in studio art and art history, Du Toit also holds a master’s degree in sociology of education from the former University of Natal, and a Ph.D. in educational leadership from Brigham Young University. Here he was awarded a J. Paul Getty Fellowship for his doctoral study that identified the finest interpretive practices at some of America’s leading art museums.
His prints and drawings are held in public and private collections in the United States, the United Kingdom, and South Africa.
