I make graphite-on-paper rubbings of street surfaces that have not yet been erased by urban gentrification, celebrating what is frequently considered ugly and mundane, but are in fact beautiful and unique indicators of our modern existence. On hands and knees and in public for hours at a time, I rub graphite onto thin paper, slowly advancing a scroll along the surfaces of a street. The process is both intimidating and exhausting, but transforms life and landscape into momentary micro-utopias of fleeting and precious fragility.
