Rob Tillberg is an American contemporary artist whose practice examines the relationship between landscape, material, and memory through large-scale abstract painting. His work is distinguished by restrained compositions, layered surfaces, and an ongoing dialogue between fine art and industrial process.
Built through successive applications of paint, abrasion, removal, and reconstruction, each painting develops as an excavation rather than a planned image. Tillberg embraces chance alongside control, allowing traces of previous decisions to remain visible beneath the final surface. The resulting works evoke weathered walls, aerial landscapes, forgotten maps, and shifting horizons—spaces that feel simultaneously familiar and undefined.
Scale plays a central role in his practice. Working primarily on oversized canvases, Tillberg creates immersive paintings designed to engage architecture as much as the viewer.
