Augusto Morelli’s paintings arise from within the artist’s frame of mind. They are populated by fragmented individuals that do not belong, figures in constant motion in the sole commonality of persistent change. These figures’ suspension in a surreal space of the unconscious is suggestive that what is to come is not certain and it does not matter, or is voided in some essential way. These characters are alive because they are in the passing lane, they have neither intention nor capacity to find roots; they live in the now, haunted by the not-yet.( Graham Giles)
Augusto Morelli is a Peruvian artist and diplomat. While still in his teens he was a student of Kurt Muller, with whom he started having an interest in engraving. He also studied at Cristina Galvez' drawing studio in Peru. He attended the Instituto Centrale per il Restauro in Rome, Italy. Augusto later worked in art conservation in various European museums. Subsequently he was awarded a scholarship by UNESCO to work at the National Museum of Anthropology in Lima. While in Peru he attended the Foreign Service School joining the Foreign Service shortly after. As a result, he has lived in many countries, a fact that has influenced his art in multiple ways. His artistic practice is influenced by Surrealism. Most importantly, his drawings and paintings address themes of discontinuity, fragmentation, rupture and dislocation.
My works are present in private collections in Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay, United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Spain, France and Vietnam.
