Nikitina Anastasia

Nika Rubinshtein (b.1991) is a contemporary artist living and working in Israel. She graduated Istituto Europeo di design (IED Milano) in Milan and worked as an interior designer and creative director for seven years. In 2019 she left design field and started her career as an artist.

Nika is moving between two worlds: familiar material world and thrilling spiritual one by giving a form to ephemeral moments, complicated feelings and to the unknown. Blurred boundaries between the two worlds are also emphasized by the style — most of the time all objects in paintings flow from one to another. This is the way Nika keeps a fine line between figurative and abstract painting.

She uses only unprimed fabrics and stretches all canvases by herself. The primary but unseen medium is water. She strongly wets the surface of the canvas and after that, she paints with synthetic dyes (mixing it with acrylic sometimes), which react chemically with water and stain the top layer of the fabric. Water also provides a free, uncontrolled movement of paint, thanks to which it seems like the painting creates itself or is under the influence of invisible forces.
