Shawna Ankenbrandt

Shawna Ankenbrandt is an American photographer. Her artwork is a reflection of nature’s beauty, intricacy, and ever-changing moods. From the earliest days, she's been drawn to the natural world, finding inspiration in its endless variety and profound simplicity. Whether capturing the delicate play of light on a flower’s petal, the vastness of a serene landscape, or the subtle textures of a weathered tree, nature has always been her muse.
Working with tintypes is a unique and challenging experience that adds an extra layer of depth and authenticity to her photography. The process requires patience, precision, and a deep understanding of the materials and chemicals involved. Each step, from preparing the metal plate to exposing and developing the image, demands careful attention to detail. The difficulty lies in the unpredictable nature of the process; slight variations in temperature, timing, or chemical composition can lead to unexpected results. But that’s also what makes it special—no two tintypes are exactly alike. Each one is a singular piece of art, with its own character and imperfections, capturing a moment in time with a sense of permanence and craftsmanship that modern digital photography simply cannot replicate.
