My work seeks a balance between tradition, nature, and impermanence, resonating with the philosophies of wabi-sabi and the connection between the abstract, the contemplative, and the richness of Mexican folklore. Inspired by Zen art and ancestral techniques such as Japanese sumi-e and yakisugi, my practice explores the beauty of transformation and the imprint of time on matter. Artists like Bosco Sodi, Javier Marín, Kazuo Shiraga, and Brian Dickerson have influenced the materialization of my work, which aspires to be silent and contemplative. Through organic materials such as treated wood, acrylic and natural pigments, lime, cement, sand, plaster, and clay, I seek to capture the fleeting spontaneity of nature. The cracks, textures, and organic forms that emerge in each piece reflect the balance between the natural and the constructed, in a dialogue where imperfection and harmony coexist. Branches, roots, and splinters from a variety of trees and shrubs become symbols of natural beauty. Nature, as I perceive it—not as it is—expresses itself in the sinuous randomness of a dry branch, sculpted by the passage of time. Through fire applied to the bark, in an almost ritualistic gesture, I carbonize the wood to prolong its existence and reveal its essential form. The object becomes a sculpture on the canvas, with the deep, dark color of charcoal as a testament to its transformation.
