Email: Nkemka Uche is a Nigerian photographer, based in Lagos. For over a decade, Uche has explored his eclectic mix of interests through photography. In 2016, Uche was an Art X Prize finalist at the inaugural Art X Lagos. For his Intentional Movements series, Uche combines photographic technicality and aesthetics in exploring the idea that a series of deliberate changes creates new experiences. Inspired by leaf printing, Uche intentionally moves his camera during long exposures to create brush-like streaks of tree branches. Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) is a photographic technique that involves a playful curiosity about the cause and effect relationship between hand movements and captured patterns. Uche extends his curiosity by repeating and mirroring his ICM photographs, which creates geometric impressions that simulate the recursive attribute of fractals found in nature. These geometric impressions also appear to simulate resist- pattern dyeing techniques because of the difference in electromagnetic radiation (light) between the leaves in positive spaces and the sky in negative spaces.
