The artist has represented the Dominican Republic in artistic delegations to European Biennials in France, Norway, Spain and Hungary. Perez’ work has also been acquired by the Dominican Republic Museum of Modern Art, the Budapest Museum of Modern Art, the Norwegian Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Modern Art in Ibiza, Spain, and Gulf & Western Collection, New York; as well as by the telecommunications company AT&T/USA. In 1983, Pérez left his island and moved to New York City and became involved in the Pop Art movement, led by Andy Warhol and Jean Michel Basquiat. Pérez exhibited his work in Soho at that time. One year later, he mounted a solo exhibition in the lobby of the World Trade Center, as part of a celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. During the course of his career, German Pérez has had 35 solo exhibitions all over the world, presenting his work in New York, Los Angeles, Brazil, Panama, Miami, Washington, DC, Belgium, Italy. His pictorial body of work can be found in public and private collections, including in the collections of Mikhail Baryshnikov, the late Theodore Kheel, Parisian chef Alain Ducasse, Nely Galan of Galan Entertainment (Los Angeles), and Anthony Ball, former President of Fox Sports (Australia). The 2015 NY premier of the exhibit “Amen de Mariposas” focused on the topic of women, which has been a recurring theme in his artistic career. The opening date was November 25 which was established as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women in tribute of the Mirabal Sisters--national heroines and symbols of resistance and courage in the Dominican Republic. The exhibit is touring in Italy and the US. In addition, renowned writers such as Julia Alvarez, Kathy Engel and Sergio Troncoso have chosen the visuals of German Perez to illustrate the covers of their novels and poetry collections. In 2012, Pérez was named the official Artist for the Latin Grammys. Some reviewers have stated that Pérez’ paintings serve as a repository of the Dominican Republic’s cultural legacy, reflecting his country’s search for identity and voice. Pérez is a link from the island’s past to its future, as he has studied and researched the roots of the island’s cultural heritage, with a particular focus on the African influence and the island’s native Taino roots, both of which have had a permanent influence on his artistic work and vision.
