The sculpture “Screw Ball” is literally a ball made with screws. The piece was inspired by the saying, which I am sure most individuals have heard many times “you’re such a screw ball”. Initially it is the building of forms, my love of inventing as well as working with different media and techniques that drives the creation of my sculpture. However the primary motivation and inspiration for my imagery are historical and current world events, human interaction and the way we treat our environment. My work is allegorical in nature, given that the images and symbols I create have a literary sense to them. The sculptures are primarily made from traditional materials such as bronze, steel and wood. The pieces range from intimate in size to large-scale works. The exhibitions also vary from ten to thirty sculptures depending on the exhibition space. Even though the sculptures are designed to exist independently, once installed the pieces seem to play off one another creating an almost carnival-like atmosphere. The sculptures are always evolving and that means the shows are always moving in new directions. It is my hope that my sensitivity to craftsmanship and the way I work the materials will encourage the viewer to look and analyze my sculptures. They can also be drawn into my exhibitions by being able to physically interact with many of the sculptures by turning, pushing or even riding them. It is my hope that the environment that I have created will invite the audience to interact and be inspired to decipher the many mysteries that permeate my art. Though many of the sculptures are inspired by my concerns about historical and current events, it is hard to place a specific time or location on the works. Perhaps it is because many of the inspirations for my art seem to be reoccurring again and again as history unfolds.
