Raffaella Brusaglino, born in 1975, lives and works in Turin, Italy, as a freelance artist. She is is best known for her paintings where the characters, at the center of the scene, are blended with geometric backgrounds. Sharp and tapered profiles of faces and hands stand out on golden surfaces recalling the Byzantine preciousness. The subjects call to mind an imaginary Middle Age or the 15th century Florentine painting. Well-defined details follow indefinite, fringed masses, rough surfaces obtained with thick scratched matter, deposited with the spatula and spontaneous gestures. The texture comes from a wide range of media, including metallic foil, plaster, paper and threads. Brusaglino's art is both figurative and abstract, with traits of informal and surrealism. Her large canvases lead to a poetic, oneiric and magical dimension where any marking becomes memory, narration and metaphor according to a mysterious language; the absence of perspective clues creates a displacement effect that suggests multiple meanings. Raffaella Brusaglino obtained the Academic Diploma in Illustration in 1998 from the IED (European Design Institute), in Turin. In 1999 she was an intern at the Minor Theatre of Prague (Czech Republic), upon winning a grant of the Lifelong Learning Programme Leonardo da Vinci. Still for the theatre, she was an illustrator for the Teatro Stabile of Turin. In 2005-2006 she moved to Barcelona (Spain), to work for the gestual theatre company Trukitrek, to the theatre sets, costumes and original puppet characters. Over the years and different art experiences, Raffaella explored numerous painting techniques, spanning from the ancient fresco, to wood restoration and painting restoration, forming her original and personal style, expressed in artworks on walls and furniture, besides canvases.
