Chance Purpose is an artist who delights in damage, based in Sydney, Australia.
“In an effort to detach perception and ego from my art I chose a pseudonym that doubles as an approximation of my process. I destroy existing objects like porcelain heirlooms, antique ceramics and factory-made bisques by dropping them at height and then repairing them to create entirely new objects with intention and purpose.
My approach is a bastardised take on the venerated Japanese art of Kintsugi, pushing traditional Shinto values to unnatural extremes. Where Kintsugi embraces accidental damage and natural wear as part of an object’s spiritual narrative, I seek to directly influence and create narrative where none exists, exploiting faults and drawing attention to an object’s destructive past. I deliberately break ornaments and exaggerate the overt means of their reconstitution in order to imbue them with identity, history and value.
TL;DR: I break shit and make it better.”
