Hewitt's work is rooted in landscape. Her gestural painterly technique frequently moving towards abstraction. Places from memory are re-constructed. Her paintings have an eerie, uncanny quality to them; depicting uninhabited landscapes with an undercurrent of unease and melancholy .
Hewitt is interested in the physical, three dimensional nature of paint. There is an expressive use of colour built up in a series of layers to create depth and texture . Dark deep rich hues are played off bright almost ugly tones. Pencil is worked into the paint so you catch glimpses of the graphite marks shimmering within the layers.
