Diep Quy Hai, born in 1971, currently is a painter and art professor at the Vietnam University of Fine Arts. His artworks are kept at Vietnam Fine Arts Museum and Ho Chi Minh Fine Arts Museum. In a long period before, Diep Quy Hai took inspiration from oil-painting material to create abstract paintings. Recently, he has turned his focus to experimenting on Lacquer painting by using additive materials to emboss on the painting surface. His works attract viewer by using typical basic color of the traditional Lacquer such as gold, stone-red, green, and what’s even more impressive are shapes and forms. It is recognized that there are some simple visual symbols in his paintings such as: the continuous connected circles, dashes, wave-lines which associates with the patterns using in ancient art like on the Dong Son Bronze Drum. These symbols bring a familiar feeling to viewers and encourage their imaginative ability to ponder on the idea of the artist.
