Duane Nickerson

I am a Canadian artist who has been exhibiting oil paintings for four decades. My work has gone through many transformations during this time, but the recurring element is the slow, deliberate, repetitive process of making marks that resolve into a larger whole. My work is representational, but is linked to other transcendental image making processes such those found in Tibetan Buddhism and the secular work of Agnes Martin and Robert Ryman. What is painted is, to me, less important than how it is painted.

Many years ago I completed a Master of Fine Art degree in Visual Art. In the years since, I had chosen to focus on the process of painting from observation and study the work of old masters such as Ruisdael, Chardin, Turner and Bierstadt. These artists who spent countless hours manipulating the material of oil paint and observing the unlimited visual complexity of the natural world have so much to teach about the process of generating meaning through hand-made images.
