Eliot Siegel (that's me..) was born at St Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan in October of 1958. (They've torn it down, so sad) When Black & White Photography was offered for the first time in my NY high school, (1974) I jumped at the chance and a great passion was born. Continuing in photography and psychology at University, I studied fine art, portraiture and fashion. Back in the real world, (1980) after 4 years as assistant fashion photographer in NYC, I packed up and moved to Milan, Italy for 4 years, then Paris and finally settling in London as a fashion magazine and fashion advertising photographer. I was fortunate enough to have worked for British Vogue, GQ, Manner Vogue, (Munich) Italian Harper's Bazaar, (Milan) L'Officiel (Paris) and quite a few more. Before I had left for Milan in 1985, I'd worked in NYC for Cosmopolitan and Essence magazines. I Always kept my heart in the Fine Art mode, throughout my career.
I chose Southern Illinois University for it's well respected program in Photography, and studied both photography and psychology.
Throughout my European travels, I never forgot my roots as a fine art photographer and took every opportunity to photograph the things that interested me; from urban street photography to messages in the urban landscape, to windows and reflections in my body of work called Sex, Lies and the Single Mannequin.
Eliot has written and illustrated several internationally best selling photography books, called: Fashion Photography Course, published in the UK by Thames and Hudson, and by Baron's in the USA. Also written was Photographing Women, published in the USA by Peachpit, and Photographing Models, published by Bloomsbury in the UK.
