Emily Perrin

Emily creates intricate paper collages with hundreds of individual pieces, thrifted from her many piles of paper ephemera, vintage magazines and books that have been obsessively collected (hoarded) through the years.

The rich variety of source material encourages manipulation and re-appropriation of imagery to create a new narrative. Dense patchworks of unrelated images and fragments offer the chance to play with the subjectiveness of semiotics. This, paired with the act of discovering hidden details within each artwork draws the viewer to an intimate moment of self interpretation. Reoccurring themes include the lost and the found, memories and the passing of time.

Emily is drawn to the simplicity and freedom of collage as a medium, and the opportunity to explore relationships between form, colour, tone and pattern. The act of collating, cutting, curating & composing demands constant visual analysis, a mindful and intuitive process. The joy is in finding compositional balance and rhythm through the juxtaposition of precision cut and hand torn pieces, and in placing pieces with similitude alongside those with contrast.
