International painter Gianne de Genevraye paints public gardens in Europe, Japan, Mexico the UK and the United States. She is a Contemporary Nature Painter, exhibiting widely with work seen in collections in prestigious garden and city collections. A California native, she lives in both France and Laguna Beach while doing art residencies in gardens around the world. Gianne’s focus is on painting in public gardens and exhibiting in public spaces. She has completed 17 garden residencies in the past 9 years. She is invited to teach at the Annenberg Foundation yearly, and recently exhibited at the Newport Public Library. Gianne has embraced the concept of sustainability and is committed to help frame the discussion of conservation through the aesthetics of painting water wise gardens.
Born in California, she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of California Irvine, studying under contemporary masters Judy Chicago, Tony Delap, Craig Kaufman and John Paul Jones. She attended the University of Paris, La Sorbonne. She was studio assistant to Jennifer Bartlett in Paris, France for three years. In 1990-91, she was an Invited Artist at the American Academy of Rome.
She is regularly invited to give conferences about her work, and is invited yearly to teach a workshop at Annenberg Foundation in Rancho Mirage.
In 2011, Gianne painted and exhibited on site in the Château Bachivillers where Mary Cassatt lived and worked in France. In 2012, Gianne was a resident painter and exhibited on site in the garden Jardin des Méditerranées at the Domaine du Rayol in the south of France. In December 2012, she painted a series of paintings at the historic vineyard Hospice du Clos Cristal, that were exhibited at the Saumur Hospital. In 2013, Gianne had a residency and exhibition at the Casa Romantica Cultural Center of San Clemente in California. In 2014-15, she did a two-part residency at the Hortense Miller Garden in Laguna Beach, California, along with lectures and art talks. In 2014, she was in residence at the Hanbury Botanic Gardens, the home of the Botanical chair of the University of Genoa, Italy. In 2015, Gianne completed a Hortense Miller Garden residency with a solo exhibition on site in Laguna Beach, California. She was invited to paint in residency at La Mortella gardens on the island of Ischia near Naples, Italy in 2015.
