Ian Muir

I'm based in London, UK and paint both representational and abstract art. I take inspiration from modern masters and use only the highest quality hand made oil paints. My work is usually for private clients.

An American art collector once said: "If I can understand a painting in thirty seconds, I'm not interested." I seek to address this idea, creating paintings that are a provocation for questions and discussion that "never reaches the bottom" - a phrase once attributed to Velasquez' "Las Meninas."

Painting in oils on canvas enables my work to use both physical and optical colour mixing, three-dimensional surface textures and layering. I use brushes, pallet knives and pre-cut shapes to apply paint.

While largely self-taught, I come from an artistic family and won my first commission at the age of 16.
