Recently I have been producing paintings primarily of plug sockets and information cables, converters and connectors. These have developed from an interest in the physical dirty basic components upon which our (advanced) civilisation is supported; the hidden prongs and slots that allow our immaculate products to function. Mains connectors possess ergonomic and anthropomorphic qualities - mirroring our bodies and imitating our sexual interactions. I paint from photographs found online through algorithmic associations and organically curated blogs. These photos seem not to have been taken with a clear purpose, for example to sell an item, to record a moment, to get feedback on a new hair cut; but instead taken in response to a light empathy for the subject (recognition?). They are taken quickly, phone in hand, flash on, and added to databases of like and related images. The harsh lighting and angle of sight indicate the presence of the camera and photographer; the photographer’s response becomes a subject in the painting.
The handling of brush and paint imitates the crudity of the solutions portrayed.
