James Page's work is an exploration of our correlative human condition: between the corporeal and the metaphysical. In an examination of our physical substance Page continually asks us to reassess our social predispositions towards matter. His work oscillates between images of erotic stimulation and the temporal condition of our physical state. The duality between vitality and atrophy throughout his work is an admission, and indeed a celebration, of our earthly existence. Consistently in his work Page seeks to erase material distinctions; clay becomes mud, or flesh, or bone and incidentally is neither cause for delight or dismay. The need to affirm the physical consistency of his body with the earth itself is a meditation on human origin and place.
There is immediacy to Page's work that develops into a tension. Often, through the use of his own bodily materials, his pieces cause a primary emotive displeasure but as one continues to look the works beauty becomes apparent. His work illustrates the contradictory manner in which we see our body, after which we are compelled to reassess.
