James Sutherland

Born in Inverness, Scotland, as the son of an art teacher and a carpenter, James Sutherland now lives and paints in Munich, Germany. Involved in the community through children's art workshops and various artist groups, he mainly creates a unique brand of abstract paintings.

James Sutherland is a painter coloured by his surroundings. Whether it's the urban sprawl of a big city or the stillness of a day on a hill in the countryside, his experiences from a well-travelled and often out-of-the-ordinary existence give him a wealth of stimuli on which to feed. His is a modest form of creation, sailing past the "bullshit" often associated with the artform. After becoming disillusioned with realistic work, he finally found his "home" in abstract art 15 years ago and has never looked back. His paintings are described by him as an "attack on the white surface" of his medium and each is the culmination of exhaustive thematic exploration that can take months.
